1. HELSINKI 2008: PRELIMINARY INVITATION PUBLISHED
The Preliminary Invitation and Call for Papers has been published and is now available in pdf format on the conference website. Submission of abstracts has started online:

2. WEIMAR 2007: COMMERCIAL SESSIONS CALL FOR PAPERS
Planning, Design, and Construction as well as Operation, Maintenance and Repair of Structures demand for a multitude of innovative products and services. Therefore, the IABSE Symposium in Weimar, Germany, 2007, will - in parallel to the Technical Sessions and in addition to the Commercial Exhibition - incorporate Commercial Sessions.
These Sessions will provide a platform for companies to present and explain their products and services to the participants of the Symposium. The Call for Papers deadline is March 31, 2007. More information:

3. ELECTIONS 2007: CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
Committee elections will be held at the IABSE Annual Meetings, Weimar, in September 2007. There are openings on the Executive Committee, in several Working Commissions and in new Working Groups of IABSE.
Individual members of IABSE may submit nominations to the Chair of their National Group or to the Secretariat by February 28, 2007:

4. NEW IABSE WORKING GROUPS
In our last e-newsletter we reported on three new 'Working Groups'. The themes have now been more specified and it is still possible to participate and get actively involved. The first meetings will be held at the IABSE Annual Meetings in Weimar, Germany, September 16-18, 2007. If you want to contribute, please contact the Chair of the Working Group you are interested in per email. The new Working Groups are:

5. OSTRA 2008: CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
If you wish to propose a nomination for the IABSE Outstanding Structure Award 2008, please contact the Chair of your National Group well before April 30, 2007, when they will submit their proposals to the Executive Committee.

6. SEI 1/2007: STRUCTURES IN GERMANY
The February issue of Structural Engineering International (SEI) has been printed and is on its way to you. In this issue there is a special series of articles presenting some of the best recent projects in Germany. In addition to these papers, there will also be an article on an eye-catching structure in Spain. The 'Reports' and 'Science and Technology' papers will as usual present in depth articles on various aspects of structural engineering. The full length articles will be available in pdf format via the Members Area by mid February. In the meantime, view the contents and abstracts of the newest issue on the IABSE website and download one full length article whilst waiting for your SEI:

7. BANGLADESH: NEW NATIONAL GROUP
We are pleased to welcome the Bangladesh Group of IABSE to our Association. The seven members met in December in Dakha, Bangladesh, to form their Executive Committee, chaired by Mr M.A. Sobham, Managing Director of DPM Consultants Ltd. 8. NEWS FROM THE NATIONAL GROUPS
British Group of IABSE

- publishes a newsletter twice a year, which is circulated to members in the UK. The recent edition (January 2007) can be accessed via:

- The Milne Medal has been awarded to Mr Tristam Carfrae, Arup, UK. Mr Carfrae received the Medal on December 7, 2006 from Professor David Nethercot, Vice-President of IABSE and Chair of the British Group. Mr Carfrae will hold the 'Milne Medal Lecture' on March 1, 2007. More information at the link mentioned above.
Lithuanian Group of IABSE

9. IABSE FOUNDATION: TALENT SUPPORT
The IABSE Foundation supports individuals, groups, institutions and organisations with technical or scientific interest in honouring our objectives within structural engineering.
The annual volume of grants is about CHF 50,000. If you wish to apply for a grant, please apply by June 30, 2006. Applications will be decided upon at the Annual Foundation Council Meeting. More information and application form:

10. OBITUARY
Ben C. Gerwick, Jr - Builder, Teacher, Creative Innovator, and Pioneer in the Fields of Prestressed Concrete, Deep Foundations and Marine Construction passed away on December 25, 2006. In 1971 he joined the faculty of the University of California at Berkeley as a Professor in Civil Engineering, concurrently he set up a specialised consulting engineering practice. He served from 1974 to 1978, as President for the International Federation of Prestressing (FIP now fib) and his company became affiliated with COWI A/S, Denmark in 1988. Ben Gerwick was an outstanding engineer and received numerous international awards and recognition over the years. He was a Fellow of IABSE and a Member of our Association since 1982. IABSE extends its sincere condolences to his family.
