One hundred and twenty years passed since the first railway was built and put into operation in China in 1987.The construction of the first railway tunnel-Shiqiuling tunnel started in 1888,about one hundred and ten years ago.Railway tunneling has been developed in China with the railway construction ,more than one century the development of railway tunneling went through countless difficulties and setbacks.

　In the period of late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China (1888-1949) ,China was a semi-colonial ,semi-feudal society.Imperialist countries invaded from outside and there was carried out mainly in the country.Railway construction was ruled over by foreigners and rating backward techniques .Only after the founding of the People's Republic of China,railway construction has been greatly developed and especially toward the mountainous western regions with tunnel construction advanced by leaps and bounds.Great achievements have been reached in the respect of wurveying and design,construction,operation,scientific research,education,etc.By the end of the 20 th century China already ranked among the world's most advanced in railway tunneling.
